Paul’s emphasis in Ephesians 5:22-33 is marital unity. He frames Ephesians 5:21-6:9 with Jesus’s transcultural teaching of mutual submission, but expresses the principle for his culture in ways relevant to them. What does that mean for us in a different culture (e.g., we rightly denounce slavery) 2000 years later?
